This unit is divided into two main sections. Firstly, it will develop a critical theology of priesthood, ministry and pastoral care in the Orthodox tradition and contemporary life. Secondly, the unit will study practical applications of the Church’s vision and ministry to priestly and pastoral life and service in the Church. The unit will examine topics including the nature of the priesthood of believers, the ordained priesthood, church tradition and structure and the role of women in the church.

Learning outcomes
  • Analyse the relationship between the diaconate, presbytery and the episcopate and their interaction in the practical functioning of a diocese
  • Reflect theologically and practically on the pastoral role of the priest in the local parish and within the diocese
  • Discuss the competing roles and responsibilities of a parish priest
  • Evaluate the role of women in a local parish of the Orthodox Church
  • Formulate a set of mission goals for a parish context
