Do you have a love or fascination for Eastern Christian Art?
St Athanasius College (SAC) will once again be offering the popular unit on COPTIC ART AND ICONOGRAPHY I (DL1410A) in Semester 1, 2020!
This unit is a practical subject that will be taught by the renowned Coptic iconographer Mr Ashraf Gerges, and assisted by Mr Shady Nessim, at SAC’s city campus at 285 La Trobe Street, each Monday night from 6.30pm–9.30pm.
Students undertaking this unit will gain an appreciation of the theological meaning behind icons. Emphasis will be placed on the “writing” of icons as an important method of translating the “invisible divine” into the visible image. Students will study the important role of art in Coptic culture and its role in liturgical life, and explore the meaning, theology, and symbols of the icon and how they are grounded in Scripture. Finally, students will learn iconographic techniques used to write an icon, such as preparation, designing, colouring, and gilding.
To ensure attention to each student, numbers will be limited, so be sure to enrol quickly.
